Cross Country Team
Cross country running remains a signature activity with our after-school programs. There are five meets taking place at Overlook Park for the Fall 2019 season. It is a wonderful, low-key event put on by Foot Traffic with cooperation through Portland Parks and Recreation. Through meets, we expose our young runners to the concepts of team camaraderie, goal-setting, and personal striving. Fourth-graders and younger compete in a 1500-meter race, and fifth- and sixth-graders, a 2000 meter race. We record our times in each race, however it is less a competition against others, as it is working towards improving individual performances. Our objective is to foster an appreciation for athletics outside of the school environment and build self-esteem and self-confidence along the way.
Cross Country Practice
We practice at Duniway Park Track, the Lilac Garden Park above Duniway, and in the surrounding hills. There are a total of seven Monday practices and four Thursday practices after school. Additionally, we have seven Saturday morning runs at Hoyt Arboretum. We meet at Stevens Pavilion (just across road from the visitor’s center) at 8:30 am. We begin by running the Wildwood trail, progressing to more challenging trails through the season.
Monday Practices: September 9, 16, 23, 30 and October 7, 14, 21
Thursday Practices: August 29, September 5, 12, and October 3
8:30am Saturday Runs at Hoyt Arboretum: Sept. 7, 14, 21, 28 and Oct. 5, 12, 19

For after-school cross country practice, please pick-up your child by 5:15pm at The International School’s lower playground. For Saturday runs, meet back at Stevens Pavillion at 9:15am, or better yet, why not put on your own running shoes and join us?
Meet location, dates and time:
Meets will be held at Overlook Park at the same time each week. The 1500m race begins at 5:00 PM on Thursday evenings for children in fourth grade and below. The 2000m race, for fifth- and sixth-graders, starts about 10-15 minutes later. Runners need to arrive by 4:40pm to warm up and stretch before race time.
Mark your calendars for meet days, they are September 19th and 26th, and October 10th, 17th and 24th.
For the after-school practices, children should pack a nutritious, easily digestible snack to eat as school ends. Runners will need good running shoes and socks, a water bottle, sunscreen and appropriate dress for running and the weather. If weather looks to be cool or wet, a warm set of sweats and/or a shell to repel water is important to ward off chills. Don't forget the sunscreen!
For meets, in addition to above, please remember to wear your team t-shirt.
Suggested age for Participation
Runners in first grade and higher can sign up for cross country. Invariably, there are younger runners who inquire about cross county, and I have had an occasional kindergartner participate with success, but even at the first grade level, readiness is determined on a case-by-case basis. The younger runners often thrive in the company of their older friends.
