CROSS COUNTRY Running
Running remains a signature activity with TIS students. It is a valuable opportunity to gain experience as a team member and to compete in either a 1500 meter race (runners 4th grade and younger), or a 2000 meter race (5th and 6th grade). The course will be located in Overlook Park. There will be 4 races at the Overlook Park for our season.
Although Global Kids will change the structure of after school classes at our school, it will not impact the Cross Country Program.
Suggested age range of participants. Runners from 1st grade and older can sign up for cross country. Invariably there are younger runners who inquire about cross county, I have had an occasional kinder child run with us with success, but even at the first grade level, it can be a case by case basis. The goal is to grow the desire in the runner.
Practices: There are a total of 17 practice sessions being offered plus an additional 4 cross country meets. Locations and times vary. A complete listing can be found here: Cross Country Practice Schedule
Cost: $294.00 includes the season and four cross country meets.
Meet Location, dates and time: Meets will be held at the same venue at the same time each week. Overlook Park (see link above) location starting at 5:00 PM on Thursday evenings for children in forth grade (and younger) running a 1500 m race. For 5th and 6th grade, the 2000 m race will start at 5:20 PM. Runners should arrive by 4:40pm to warm up and stretch before their race time.
Objective: To introduce young runners to the beginnings of fellowship as well as personal striving and goal setting. To build self-esteem and self confidence, and to foster appreciation for athletics outside of the school environment and building social interactions with others. Although runners will be on the same 'team' it will not be a strict competition against others, rather we will record our times in each race to work towards improving individual performances. It is a wonderful, low-key event put on by Foot Traffic with cooperation through Portland Parks and Recreation.
Equipment needed: For the after-school practices, children should pack a nutritious, easily digestible snack to eat as school ends. Runners need running shoes w/good socks, water bottle, sunscreen and dress appropriately for running and the weather. If weather looks to be cool or wet, a warm set of sweats or a shell to repel water is important to ward off colds. Don't forget the sunscreen.
