Our Sporting Lives offers three main running programs throughout the school year and summer. Some programs run for multiple dates.
Cross Country running
This is a great introduction to competition for young athletes. We focus on team fellowship, as well as personal striving and goal setting. It is a great way to build self-esteem, confidence, and an appreciation for athletics outside of the school environment. Although runners will be on the same 'team' it will not be a strict competition against others, rather we will record our times and work towards improving individual performances. It is a wonderful, low-key event put on by Foot Traffic with cooperation through Portland Parks and Recreation.
This program is offered after school year round; giving students the chance to keep doing what they love - run. The goal of this program is to build attachment to a life-long activity and usher in what will hopefully be a healthful affinity for a physically active lifestyle. Parents often report that their child does their best (school work, eating, and sleeping) while participating in the after school running classes. Young runners experience joy, camaraderie and growing self-confidence; all while increasing their strength and endurance.
track and field
Track and Field is offered in the Spring and Summer. Practices are twice a week on Monday and Thursday. Our team practices at Dunway Park. Track meets are held by Foot Traffic at Grant High School in the Spring. Young athletes are given the chance to participate in all field events (high jump, long jump, shot put, softball throw); as well as multiple distance races (60m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m) and a 4x100m relay. Racing is finished by 7:45pm. The fast paced fun makes for memorable nights out for the whole Family.
